The rhizomes or rootstock of Valerian wallichi has great medicinal value and is used both, externally as well as internally. Externally, the paste of Valerian wallichi is applied in wounds for better healing, in fractures to promote callus formation and in rheumatic joints to alleviate pain and swelling. The wounds washed with the decoction of Valerian wallichi, heal earlier and the pain is also relieved. The paste of Valerian wallichi mashed in water is applied on forehead to alleviate the pain. Internally, Valerian wallichi is used in vast range of diseases. The CNS depressant and sedative action of valerian extract finds a use in the Ayurvedic therapy of delirium, insomnia, epilepsy and behavioral disorders. Valerian wallichi is also used in anxiety, tremors and as a nervine to enhance the memory. In vata diseases like paralysis and facial palsy, Valerian wallichi is a valuable remedy. Valerian wallichi works well in arthritis, rheumatic disorders and gout. Valerian wallichi is helpful in digestive disorders like anorexia, flatulence, abdominal pain, ascites associated with hepatosplenomegaly and hepatitis. As it alleviates the kapha dosha, it is benevolent in the whooping cough and asthma. Valerian wallichi is diuretic, hence, beneficial in dysuria. Valerian wallichi is salutary in male sexual debility. Valerian wallichi reconciles the menstrual cycle and is an effective remedy for dysmenorrhea. In diarrhea, the Valerian wallichi mashed in buttermilk are given. Valerian wallichi powder mixed with honey is recommended in epilepsy.
Vinca rosea alkaloids are Hypotensive, sedative and have tranquilising properties and are anti cancerous. Vinca rosea helps in relieving muscle pain, depression of central nervous system and wasps stings. Vinca rosea is used in case of nosebleed, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and sore throats. Vinca rosea is also used internally for loss of memory, hypertension, cystitis, gastritis and enteritis, diarrhea and raised blood sugar levels. Vinca rosea is the chief source of alkaloids Vincrstine and vinblastine.
Vitex neugudo roots, fruits, flowers, leaves and bark have great medicinal value and are used for medicinal purpose externally as well as internally. Externally, Vitex neugudo decoction is used for steam bath for arthritis, joint pains and sciatica. Particularly, Vitex neugudo is very effective in alleviating the low back pain. Vitex neugudo leaves when smoked are said to relieve catarrh and headache. Oil prepared with Vitex neugudo juice is applied to sinuses and scrofulous sores. Oil is used also as bathing oil for rubbing on the head and in cervical lymphadenitis. The oil is also found to be salutary for sloughing wounds and ulcers. In premature graying of hair and scalp infections like pediculosis and lice, the oil is applied with great benefit. Decoction of Vitex neugudo leaves is an effective gargle in stomatitis and sore throat. The poultice of hot leaves applied on swollen and painful joints, effectively mitigates the pains. Medicated oil is beneficial in suppurative otitis. The tub-bath of the decoction of its leaves is rewarding in sciatica, epididymo-orchitis and uterine inflammations. Internally, Vitex neugudo is salubrious in vast range of diseases. Vitex neugudo is used in vitiated conditions of vata like sciatica, arthritis, headache, spondylosis as a pain killer. Vitex neugudo juice is given along with cow’s urine, as a panacea for splenic pathology, associated with ascites. Vitex neugudo is extremely beneficial in cough, asthma, bronchitis and inflammatory conditions of pleura. Being diuretic, it is valusble in strangury to facilitate the micturition. The skin affections associated with pruritus are effectively ameliorated with Vitex neugudo. The juice of Vitex neugudo combined with honey, alleviates fever. Vitex neugudo is an influencial herb in vitiated conditions of vata, like hysteria, epilepsy, insomnia, vertigo etc. and works well as a brain tonic as well. Vitex neugudo is a good rejuvenating plant in general debility. Vitex neugudo works well as a rasayana with silajita (Black Bitumen).
